Connie Young Yu was instrumental in naming the park Heinlenville Park

San Jose’s Japantown newest park called Heinlenville Park recently opened on Tuesday October 10th 2023. The origin of Heinlenville started in 1887 when Chinatown on Market Street in San Jose’s downtown was purposely burned down due to racial hatred against Chinese people. But John Heinlen, a German immigrant farmer and businessman provided inexpensive leases and protection to the local Chinese community even though he was threatened by the city’s white community. Heinlenville in San Jose lasted until 1931 but closed down due to The Great Depression. The name Heinlenville Park was spearheaded by a letter-writing campaign by the Chinese Historical & Cultural Project (CHCP) with community support and finally approved by the San Jose City Council.

Viva Calle Sunday September 10th 2023

This is what Viva Calle is about

On a warm and sunny day on Sunday September 10th 2023 tens of thousands of bicycle riders rode through the streets of central San Jose. Viva CalleSJ is a family friendly recreation program on the streets of San Jose bringing diverse communities together to walk, bike, skate, and having fun in the city.

But Viva Calle, a popular community event in San Jose, could be reduced from 3 events to 2 next year if the city cuts the funding. The city plans to cut Viva Calle from three to two days, and cut 25% of Viva Parks budget or $1.1 million targeted for primarily minority neighborhoods to fund the new union deals. But the SJ citizens and Viva Calle participants can avert the cut in funding at an important City Council meeting on September 12th 2023.

The Roof Thatchers of Ouchi-juku

Roof Thatchers are skilled workers that build roofs of traditional houses, temples and shrines in Japan. They use plants that supported the life in rural districts like manure or fodder (straw) for the animals. But modernization is making thatching obsolete and has been rapidly disappearing. The art of roof thatching is a local resource and helps assist with village revitalization and community development. The roofs have heat-insulating properties and air-permeability that are sustainable, recyclable plant resource that can be used instead of petroleum. Currently there are 100.000 thatched buildings in Japan and around 300 thatchers. Thatchers use rice straw, wheat straw ,bamboo grass and cedar bark as thatching materials.
